In the past, I considered a tattoo for a variety of reasons. A milestone (e.g. birthday, anniversary, etc.), but never took the plunge. Instead, I opted for piercings. Ink is pretty permanent. Piercings can be; but if at some point you decide you don’t like or want one anymore, well you simply remove the jewelry. Unless the piercing was done by someone who did not employ proper hygiene and sterilization standards, there is unlikely a risk of infection. And of course if post piercing aftercare was not done properly there is a chance of infection too. Neither scenario would likely have severe health implications, but could potentially cause localized infection that might spread if not addressed.

For me, I prefer to have the knowledge and certainty that what I’m putting in my body is safe today, and won’t cause any harm in the future.
