I've had an HBOT for a year now - and I love it! It is 1.5 ATA. My understanding is,it provides 5-7x more oxygen into plasma. I work in my chamber - can sit up and use my computer - so no time wasted. With my husband and i both using it, the amortization over 10 years is less than $50/month per person. Money well spent ....Wrote about my experience here: https://www.apoe44.org/p/the-power-of-hyperbaric-oxygen-a
Well I do believe Hyperbaric oxygen therapy does have a significant role to play in neurological restoration and repair and neurocognitive enhancement. My own experience with the commercialization of this technology was not that favorable. From Dubai and Hyperbaric Center opened up and they did 10 sessions and would do MRI before and after. My patient brought the MRIs to me for review, and I can tell you that all they did was change the windowing on the scan and there was no measurable difference on the MRI between the 10 sessions. Now if it's more like 60 sessions, I think there could be a visible effect especially with perfusion imaging, pet Imaging, and functional MRI.
This is one of the more useful HBOT pieces I’ve seen because it separates intriguing biology from what has actually been shown in people. I also appreciated the practical angle about time, cost, and the gap between clinic-grade and home systems. Do you think the field is most in need of larger trials now, or of better dose and durability data first?
Really appreciate the nuance here, especially the distinction between soft and hard chambers. That detail gets lost so often in wellness conversations. I tried HBOT myself and the protocol, pressure level, and oxygen concentration made all the difference in what I actually felt. The 90 minutes can feel daunting at first but honestly became one of the more restorative parts of my week.
Thank you for this fascinating snapshot of where we are today with this technology. I've been wondering if these chambers in gyms etc had any benefit. The thought of sleeping in one feels impossible to me, so anything that could make these more tolerable for those that can't tolerate the confinement could be huge.

I wrote about what I actually experienced session by session here: https://drmarkchern.substack.com/p/what-people-are-actually-experiencing

Thanks for this excellent deep dive on hyperbaric oxygen therapy to prevent cognitive decline and/or dementia.
My take is that more clinical evidence is required before I would utilize it or recommend it to my patients
