Great piece. I wonder what happens if next-gen peptides, gene therapies, etc actually end up working at some point in the future to increase performance gains to 10% or so (and the games are redesigned to actually measure this). If it ever happens, it'll be far in the future, but the hypothetical seems interesting. If one day EG becomes a lucrative arms race, more people would probably watch to see which records fall and whose pharmacologist built the best engine. How would a lucrative enhancement market begin steering scientific talent to different priorities? What if venture capital for human optimization grows to rival or exceed traditional research grants? Just like funding for F1 engineering can trickle down to consumer cars, could big R&D budgets for breaking records lead to breakthroughs in tissue regeneration, mitochondrial efficiency, etc? Or maybe it'd pull our best scientific minds away from less glamorous public health priorities.
